Keeping poultry is the driving force behind this place, which specialises in
producing organic, free-range eggs, with a special emphasis on pure bred hens.
The farm was founded in 1934 by Ernest Harrison. In due course, the farm passed
to his three sons, Tom, Ernie and John, and now rests in the hands of grandson
Tim Harrison and his wife Janet, who continue the passion for poultry.
It is nearly 30 years since Tim and Janet decided to make Abbey Leys fully organic and free-range in a bid to provide a premium product which, they recognised, was becoming an increasingly important selling point in a highly competitive market.

The farm became accredited by the Soil Association in 2001. This requires adherence to extremely stringent standards: no artificial fertilisers or chemicals on the land; must use only approved feed. The poultry must be kept in smaller flocks and have ample space indoors and out: a provision which reduces aggressive behaviour and makes for happier, healthier hens, which live longer and lay a better tasting egg.
In the main the hens roost in the traditional wooden henhouses that Tim’s
Grandfather put up in the 1930’s. This generous and sturdy accommodation, with its roosting perches and cosy, straw-lined nest boxes, has more than stood the test of time, keeping the poultry warm, comfortable and well protected from nocturnal predators.
